Here’s a cool tool to help you find what’s on your hard drive and where all its space is going to. It’s called JDiskReport. JDiskReport is a file management tool for your hard drive(s). Because it runs on Java, you can use it on most platforms – Windows, Linux, Mac, etc.

It scanned my 40GB hard drive in about 10 minutes and presented a nice pie chart of the results, allowing me to drill down to the detail of the various folders that are consuming space.

Double-clicking on a folder allows you to drill down and find out more detail. A Top 50 shows a list of the top 50 largest files in a folder. Other features of JDiskReport include:

  • Clicking on a folder in the left side folder tree will display in the graph
  • Scan any drive including network drives
  • Distribution of sizes per folder
  • Distribution of modification dates per folder
  • Disctribution of file types per folder
  • Embeds itself in Explorer so it’s available when you right-click on a folder
  • Print capabilities

Although a very specific program, JDiskReporter contains valuable information about your hard drive to help you manage it better.

You can download JDiskReport here.
